NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS | CAPITOL COLLEGE

Welcome to The First Edition of “The President’s Corner”. On a bi-weekly basis, I will be giving you brief overviews, and my perspective of life in the engineering field, words of wisdom, and living life as a minority.

On a daily basis, we find that living, as a minority has become a lot more easily then previous generations of living. Even though, there are still slight discrepancies when it comes to job outlooks and elevations. We still find that in the engineering field as the stakes are starting to be raised a lot higher, that will require us to undergo a lot more changes, such as returning to school to receive a higher degree, that may be the minimum requirement needed to fill a job position to be filled. To help make a lot more things easier for minorities, here’s a few steps that I think would be beneficial for anyone that is about to go into the industry for the world of work and they are….

  1. Plan ahead from the beginning, as to the path you would like to take in your career.
  2. Once you have a plan set, try your utmost to follow that plan to its endpoints, if a change is needed then go back to the drawing board and re-develop a new strategy.
  3. Know the industries expectations, and have a vision of what’s to come for your field of concentration
  4. Establish as many contacts as possible, so that you can use them as a mentor to guide you into your field.
  5. Don’t be arrogant and think that you know everything, to the point where you cant adapt to new changes in technology and in your field.

With these steps, you should be able to set yourself up and put yourself on the fast track to success. As time changes, know that your knowledge will have to increase, your thought process will have to become a lot more rapid, and your overall perspective of your field will also change.

Know that in life, as we begin to adapt to new things, will require us to always re-think, re-plan, and reevaluate our paths in life, but always make sure you have a set path in life, because if not then as you begin to drift away with time, so does your life. Make the best of it while you can, the time is ticking and no man knows the hour, nor the day that a higher power will return.

Thank you for tuning in, and I hope you enjoyed this weeks thought. See you all in two weeks for the second edition of The President’s Corner.
